The Chaoshan area of the province of Guangdong in China, consisting of Chaozhou, Shantou, and other nearby cities, is famous for its food scene. Among the many varieties of street food that you’re likely to find when visiting Chaozhou (or Teochew), the pig foot donut was one that sparked my curiosity. No pig and no donut was involved in the making of this snack. Instead, it was named this because…well, it looked like a pig’s foot and it looked like a donut, but without the hole. Inside there were small river shrimps, taro bits, scallions, and chick pea, among other things that I probably can’t name. The only downside was that the one I got wasn’t all that warm as it didn’t come freshly out of the deep fryer, but even so, it was super tasty. I especially liked how the different layers of ingredients created a gradient of textures and I could only imagine how amazing a fresh hot one would be!!
